Start with the roof, not just the panel count

A useful solar assessment considers the whole roof: clear usable area, obstructions, access paths, roof material and structural condition. A roof professional or solar designer can check whether the proposed layout is practical and safe before installation.

Check shade throughout the day

Trees, nearby buildings, tanks and rooftop equipment can cast shadows at different times of year. The effect depends on the array layout and system components. Share known shading concerns during the site visit and ask how the proposed design accounts for them.

Match the design to electricity use

Recent electricity bills and a list of major loads help the designer understand consumption patterns. Daytime use, seasonal changes and future equipment plans can all affect system sizing. Capacity should be based on the property's requirements and applicable connection rules rather than roof area alone.

Questions for an installer

Request a layout drawing, expected generation assumptions, equipment specifications, safety provisions, warranty details and an explanation of approvals. Confirm who is responsible for installation, commissioning, monitoring setup and after-sales support.

Use the solar basics guide as a starting point, then arrange a site-specific assessment before making a decision.
